Libraries are places of gathering. By collecting, sorting, and presenting books and journals, they establish the potential of an open dialogue between ideas, thoughts, and approaches. For this dialogue to become real, they need people who look for specific books, browse the shelves, discover and compare, or just sit and read. By opening the library of the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics for an open series of discussions about the matters the institute deals with, about its topics of research, the questions it asks, its methods, and its relation to other approaches and problems in the field of aesthetics, we want to foster the kind of dialogue that libraries enable and encourage.

Beyond liking live is aimed at students of the neighboring universities and the general public. Rather than focusing on authoritative lectures, it relies on short presentations, collective reading sessions, and intensive discussions. Invited speakers can be members and guests of the institute and other scholars and artists whose work is relevant and interesting. Until actual physical presence at the institute’s library is possible, the conversations will take place online.

# 1: Quantifizierung

Bei unserer ersten Ausgabe am 7. Juli um 19 Uhr haben wir mit der Künstlerin Céline Berger,die zur Zeit Artist in Residence am Max-Planck-Institut für empirische Ästhetik ist, und dem Historiker Sebastian Manhart über die Frage der Quantifizierung diskutiert.

Was bedeutet es, etwas zu zählen und zu messen, das nicht von sich aus zählbar und messbar ist? Ausgangspunkt dafür werden aktuelle Arbeiten von Céline Berger und der Text „Messen und Rechnen. Zur semantischen Produktivität einer bedeutungslosen Semiose“ von Sebastian Manhart sein. Aufgrund der aktuellen Situation fand diese erste Ausgabe online auf Zoom statt.

Céline Berger ist bildende Künstlerin und arbeitet vor allem im Medium des Experimentalfilms.
Sebastian Manhart ist Professor für Organisationspädagogik an der Universität der Bundeswehr München.
