Developing New Analysis Approaches for EEG Hyperscanning Setups
in the Context of the Live Performing Arts
fixed term (36 months), salary scale 13 TVöD
The Postdoctoral Researcher will work with Dr. Guido Orgs and Prof. Melanie Wald-Fuhrmann on the “Neurocognition of Liveness – NEUROLIVE” research project, which is funded by the European Research Council. The project combines artistic research on dance and performance-making with mobile brain/body imaging to develop a quantitative measure of liveness. This position will have a strong computational and data analysis focus, collecting and combining multiple signals from EEG and wearable sensors. The specific aim is to develop new analysis tools and computational models for analyzing data from simultaneous EEG recordings from groups of spectators and performers during live performances in the MPIeA’s ArtLab and in the lab. In collaboration with Dr. Jamie Ward (Department of Computing, Goldsmiths, University of London) and Dr. Diego Vidaurre (Centre for Functionally Integrative Neuroscience, Aarhus University, Denmark, and University of Oxford), this work will involve the use of state-of-the-art machine-learning techniques. The role will also call for technical problem-solving skills, especially with regard to the wireless integration of a variety of sensors across multiple participants. Experiments will take place both in Frankfurt/Main as well as at Goldsmiths, University of London, and thus will involve regular research visits to London. The role will also involve collaboration with performing artists working on the project.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in psychology, cognitive and/or neuroscience, informatics, or a related field. High proficiency in oral and written English is necessary. Further highly desirable qualifications include a solid methods background (knowledge of open-source and collaborative coding practices and programming in MATLAB or Python) as well as experience in collecting and analyzing EEG and psychophysiological data and/or comprehensive experience with advanced data analysis, statistics, and research methods, including time series analysis/signal processing.
Experience in the design, planning, and implementation of experiments in laboratory settings and/or experience with signal processing from wearable sensors other than EEG (i.e., physiology, movement) is helpful. Most importantly, the successful applicant will share our enthusiasm for working in an interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment, i.e., with artists.
