Thinking of Space Musically

Worldwide migration, climate change, as well as economic and political crises are pushing common urban planning practices to their limits. The city increasingly lacks the characteristics of a homogeneous object and instead fragments into diverse material contexts of situated action. In this context, the lecture performance by Christopher Dell puts his concept of musical spatial thinking into perspective. He will present parts of his current studies 'Dialogue Concerts: Conceptual Research on Architecture and Music' and 'Space and Action.

Bio

Christopher Dell (Prof. Dr. phil. habil.) works as a theorist of urbanism and architecture, as well as a composer, musician, and artist, based in Berlin, Bergen, and Copenhagen. He is Professor of Architectural Theory at the Bergen School of Architecture (BAS), Norway. Previously, he served as Professor of Urban Design Theory at HafenCity University Hamburg and at the Technical University of Munich, and held the Chair of Urban Design and Urban Renewal at the Berlin University of the Arts.

Internationally, his teaching in the field of urbanism has included appointments at institutions such as the Architectural Association London, the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg, the ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), and ETH Zurich.

Since 2017, Dell has been a member of the North Rhine–Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 2020, he joined the Integral Designers Network in Paris as an associate member. As part of the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale, he collaborated with Christophe Hutin Architects on the French Pavilion. From 2022 to 2023, Dell was a fellow at the German Federal Republic’s Studio for Architecture at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and contributed to the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Heidelberg 2022.
