Let’s Get Lost at Klassik Island

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kammerphilharmonie Frankfurt staged a number of musical performances by small ensembles in public spaces outdoors, transforming them into open-air concert venues. Now, the full orchestra will follow suit. As Let’s Get Lost at Klassik Island, the ensemble will play a 60-minute program twice each at three different pop-locations. The program will include works by George Gershwin and Florence Price, among others.

At the end of each performance, individual audience members will be invited on stage to conduct the orchestra themselves for the encores. Given the importance of community and dialogue as key features of the orchestra's work over the past two years, there will be opportunities during the intermissions for the audiences and musicians to talk amongst themselves.

On a fourth day, Sunday, September 11th, the Kammerphilharmonie will undertake an experiment in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics: During two live concerts, the performances will be juxtaposed with their own livestreams. This will allow the audience to toggle between both formats during the concerts, feel the differences between the two formats, and reflect on their experiences.

In order to make the findings of this experiment comprehensible, three different research methods will be employed—interviews, questionnaires, and videos—which will allow the organizers and the audience to explore the distinguishing characteristics of livestreamed and live events together.

With Let’s Get Lost at Klassik Island, the Kammerphilharmonie will attempt to create new worlds out of spaces otherwise used as transit points. A stage designer will supplement the music with elements of theater design, while dancers will bring a further embodied aspect to the stage.

Admission is free for all concerts; donations, however, are welcome, and requested.
