New event series “Library Talks” at the MPI for Empirical Aesthetics
The library is a place of aesthetic experience: a place to immerse oneself into texts and media, to wander the shelves in search of that moment of serendipity allowing for discoveries of the unexpected in a good neighbourhood of kindred books. But the library is also a place to meet in the midst of these media, informally, and to exchange ideas about things written or read, watched, thought, or heard.
The new “Library Talks” series brings together scholars, practitioners, and everyone interested in conversations around all matters of aesthetics: academic, artistic, and personal experiences and other aspects, which may not have found their way onto the shelves yet, but may well be already on their way.
The series kicks off with “The Emergence of Jungle in the 1990s” on Saturday, November 9 at the library of the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. Together with DJ Stretch, a central figure of the scene, and musicologist Dr. Owen Green, the development of the jungle music genre in the UK in the 1990s will be explored through key tracks and personal insights. The event is held in cooperation with the “Bass Saturnalia” party series, where DJ Stretch will be spinning at Frankfurt's Silbergold Club later in the evening.
The second event in the series, “Barbie: A Question of Consumer Aesthetics,” will follow in December. Beyond, two further events are planned for next year.
