How Language Learning Affects Time—MEG and Game

A cartoon of a man wearing headphones with a clock in the background and the word "Hello" written in three different languages.

Have you ever wondered how learning a new language affects your thinking and particularly your sense of time?

This study investigates how learning a new language affects cognitive processes—especially time perception—using Magnetoencephalography (MEG).
You will learn an artificial language and complete a fun cognitive task using our MEG-compatible game controller—almost like playing a game!

What you can expect:

  • One MEG session
  • One MRI session

Duration and compensation:

  • Two sessions in total (MEG approx. 4 hrs/about 120 min of recording, MRI approx. 30 min)
  • Approx. 80–90€ (10€/started 30 minutes)
  • Payment is made after the final session

Participation Requirements:

  • Age: 18 to (including) 55 years
  • Good knowledge of German and English
  • Right-handed
  • No hearing impairments
  • No vision impairments (participation possible with contact lenses, not glasses)
  • No neurological or psychiatric disorders (e.g., migraine with aura, epilepsy, depression)
  • No autoimmune diseases
  • No medication intake
  • No claustrophobia
  • No non-removable metal in or on the body (e.g., retainers, tattoos with metallic pigments, pacemakers, IUDs, defibrillators, metal plates, screws, permanent make-up)
  • No implants or prostheses (e.g., shunts, stents, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, artificial joints)
  • No metal fragments in the body (e.g., from industrial work or shrapnel)
  • Not pregnant

Where Will the Study Be Conducted?

Both sessions take place at the CoBIC center in Frankfurt-Niederrad.

Important: Participation in both sessions is required.
If you have already taken part in a previous study with us, and we have your MRI scan on file, we can reuse it with your consent—in this case, the second appointment is not necessary.
