
Predictive coding in auditory perception in health and disorder
This research area follows several lines of research where mechanism of predictive processing and the contribution of auditory-motor interactions are investigated in health and disease. For example, congenitally blindness has been discussed as potential protective influence against psychosis. Predictive coding accounts associate psychosis with a disturbed optimization of prior predictions and sensory evidence resulting in an overweighting of sensory evidence. Because of the loss of the dominant visual sense, congenitally blind individuals have been proposed to rely more strongly on context extracted from other senses resulting in stable priors, which might explain protectiveness against psychosis. A goal of this research area is to understand the relation of changes in predictive coding across several disorders and congenital blindness. As another example, in this research area we are interested in how predictive processing changes in individuals with hearing disorders (such as in cochlea implant users), to potentially improve clinical applications and diagnostics.
