Flow in reading

Based on Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of „flow“ (1972), we conduct a series of studies on textual variables and readers’ characteristics, which, in their interaction, increase the likelihood of intensely pleasurable reading states. The project aims at developing an empirically testable model for the emergence and nature of reading flow. Kurt Tucholsky once portrayed the phenomenon in the following words: “Heart and lungs are working, the body is constantly doing its inner factory duty – you don’t feel it. You know nothing of the world around you, you don’t hear it, you don’t see it, you are reading.”
