Music in times of war
Music is not only something people enjoy, but also a means for individuals and communities to work through difficulties and hard times. In this project, we investigate the role of music in times of war. Studying the ways in which music is used, performed and created during a war might help to better understand the role of music in times of societal crises.
On the background of historical examples of musicking during wars, we focus particularly on the present war in Ukraine. We create a database of war music(king) that reflects the live processes of mass and academic music creation, performance and experience during the Russian-Ukrainian war and how it led to the appearance of new music types and genres, as well as the modification of existing forms. Particularly, we study how making and sharing music can become a form of resistance and help people to cope with the traumas of war.
