Neural oscillations in speech perception early in life: the role of prenatal and postnatal experience

A hierarchy of embedded neural oscillations has been proposed to play a crucial role in speech processing in adults, making it possible for humans to process multiple linguistic units in parallel (e.g. Giraud & Poeppel 2012). It remains unknown, however, how this cascade of oscillations emerges during development. This talk will present a longitudinal study investigating the developmental origins of auditory oscillations in response to native and non-native speech in newborns and 6-month-old infants, documenting the early emergence of oscillations, as well as shaping by both prenatal and postnatal language experience.
