Virtual Lecture by Hui Zhang: Memory engram during encoding, retrieval and memory consolidation

It is ecologically important to distinguish between different stimuli. We conducted studies to investigate the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying item-specific representations (ISRs) and consolidation of ISRs.  Studies were conducted in pharmacorefractory epilepsy patients who were implanted with depth electrodes. Using representational similarity analysis, we found that ISRs of items and locations relied on widely distributed gamma band activities. Maintenance of ISRs was orchestrated by low oscillations in the hippocampus. During sleep/rest period, previously formed brain patterns underlying ISRs spontaneous relayed and also replayed locked to ripple events initiated from the hippocampus. More specifically, the brain patterns of deeply processed information for later-remembered items and shallow processed information for later-forgotten items were replayed locked to ripple events.
