What is the profile of the program?

The INHABIT Artist-in-Residence program invites artists from diverse disciplines to collaborate with researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt. For a scientific research institute focused on questions of aesthetics, the presence of—and the challenging impetus from—artistic work is of particular significance. The institute regards the integration of artistic thinking and knowledge as a reflective practice in its own right and as an important dimension of its work.

The dialogue between artists and researchers, and the engagement with different perspectives, creates a mutually productive environment for both sides. Accordingly, INHABIT invites artists to spend three months developing a new artistic work in a scientific context or deepening an existing project.

Openness to the institute’s work, as well as curiosity and willingness to collaborate with individual researchers or research groups across disciplines, is expected. During the residency, the MPIEA provides spaces and resources, fostering a productive environment for experimentation, dialogue, and collaboration. In cooperation with changing cultural institutions in Frankfurt, the resulting artistic works are subsequently presented publicly as exhibitions or performances and complemented by discursive formats.

Who can apply?

→ The program is aimed at outstanding internationally active artists in the fields of performing arts, music, sound, and film. It is particularly interested in established artists who have developed a distinctive voice and profile.

→ The MPIEA seeks artists who are interested in engaging with the scientific areas of the research institute, who are curious about the context of a scientific environment, and who are willing to enter into dialogue and exchange with the scientific field.

→ At the same time, the MPIEA is interested in artists who intellectually engage with historical and current topics and discourses, approaching them with a critical perspective.

How can I apply?

The application period usually takes place in summer, between June and September. Personal information can be submitted through the MPIEA career portal, and the required application documents (motivation letter, CV, portfolio) can be uploaded there.

Unlike in previous years, we no longer accept submissions by email—we appreciate your understanding. Questions can still be directed to inhabit@ae.mpg.de

Who decides on the award of the fellowships?

The selection of artists for the residency at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics is made by diverse selection committees composed of researchers from the institute’s various departments and distinguished experts in visual arts, music, and performing arts. The composition of the jury changes with each edition.

What does the fellowship include?

→ A fully funded four-month Artist-in-Residence stay in Frankfurt am Main
→ A total fellowship of €10,000 for the duration of the residency, disbursed in four installments of €2,500 each
→ In cooperation with Goethe University Frankfurt, artists are accommodated in the university’s guest apartments in central Frankfurt. Rent must be covered by the fellowship recipient from the total fellowship sum
→ Travel costs to and from Frankfurt am Main plus a Germany-wide public transport pass

What infrastructure and resources are available?

The artists have access to all available facilities of the institute: the ArtLab, sound studio, various laboratories, extensive video and audio equipment, hardware and software, and the library.

Where will the artistic projects be presented?

For each edition, the Artist-in-Residence program collaborates with different partner institutions to situate and discuss the program, its themes, and the artistic works within a diverse cultural context. The selection of partner institutions and the presentation formats depend on the specific artistic practices and media of the guest artists
