The Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics Welcomes Its New Artists-in-Residence

This year’s INHABIT season kicks off!
Since 2019, the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) in Frankfurt am Main has been inviting visiting artists from various disciplines to the Institute every year. Together with the Institute’s researchers the artists work on existing or new projects for several months as part of the INHABIT artist-in-residence program.
March – June 2023: Victoria Keddie
This year, the British-American artist Victoria Keddie will start the program. In her work, Keddie, who will be a guest at the MPIEA from March to the end of June, combines sound and architecture to give form to utopian spatial concepts. In doing so, she aims to re-explore the human perception of its own environment and the objects that fill it.
September – December 2023: Andrius Arutiunian
In September, Lithuanian-Armenian artist Andrius Arutiunian will follow as this year’s second artist in residence and stay with MPIEA until the end of the year. Also in Arutiunian’s work, sound and music play a central role. The artist, who represented Armenia at the Venice Biennale in 2022, wants to open up perspectives beyond an existing canon and its political implications by engaging with non-Western music and its (alternative) vocal techniques.
This year’s artists in residence were selected by a jury consisting of members of the MPIEA as well as renowned personalities from the art and culture scene: Tanya Brown (MPIEA, Research Group Neural Circuits, Consciousness, and Cognition), Carina Bukuts (Curator, Portikus, Frankfurt am Main), Camilla Bruder (MPIEA, Department of Music), Christian Grüny (MPIEA, Department of Music), Ece Kaya (MPIEA, Research Group Neural and Environmental Rhythms), Bojana Kunst (Professor of Dance Studies, Institute of Applied Theatre Studies, University of Giessen), Michael Rebhahn (music journalist, SWR), and Eike Walkenhorst (MPIEA, curator INHABIT).
After the end of the residencies, the MPIEA presents the works of the artists in cooperation with different cultural institutions in Frankfurt am Main. Last year this was the Museum Angewandte Kunst. The exhibition “Contact Zones—Murat Adash, Céline Berger, Syowia Kyambi”, which closed on January 15, 2023, was a success: The three INHABIT artists and the works they created during their respective guest residencies in 2021/2022 attracted more than 14,000 visitors.
