Project: "Characterizing the Geometry of Perceptual Biases using Massive Online Experiments in Audition and Vision"

The Max-Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt, Germany, investigates the attentional, cognitive, and affective mechanisms of aesthetic perception and evaluation. The Institute currently is searching for a full-time Programmer/Lab Manager (f/m/d) for the Research Group of Nori Jacoby (Group Leader) working on the project “Characterizing the Geometry of Perceptual Biases using Massive Online Experiments in Audition and Vision”.

The group is looking for a team member to conduct massive online experiments in audition and vision. We are using a novel interactive paradigm based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo with People (Sanborn & Griffiths 2008), together with classical psychophysics adapted to the online environment. The applicant will help develop new experiments implementing both frontend (js) and backend (python) using the Dallinger platform for laboratory automation for the behavioral and social sciences (http://dallinger.readthedocs.io/) and using common web development. The applicant will also be responsible for running online experiments.

The successful applicant holds a BSc in a relevant discipline, e.g., computer science, psychology or neuroscience and possesses the following skills and experience:

  1. Command of backend developing with python+flask.
  2. Command of front-end programing with js.
  3. Experience with implementing experiments on Amazon Mechanical Turk.
  4. Applicants with experience in audio programing with html5, deploying apps with Heroku or similar cloud based platform, developing applications for mobile/tablet, machine learning, signal processing with Matlab are particularly encouraged to apply.

The position is especially suited for an applicant who would like to obtain experience and publications ahead of pursuing graduate studies in neuroscience or psychology. Candidates at other levels (MA / Phd / Postdoc) with similar skills and interests are welcome to contact the Jacoby Research Group as well, considering the information given below.

The position is for a period of two years and an extension is possible. Salaries are determined following the salary scale E 10 of the German TVÖD (Bund)*, depending on experience. The start date is negotiable.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Please submit a detailed CV, a summary of research interests and experience, two examples of programing projects, one writing sample, and the names of two references – in a single pdf – by June 1, 2019 with the reference “Nori Jacoby Programmer/Lab Manager” to:
