Über die Linie

Wolfgang Rihm’s Über die Linie (1999) for solo cello—which might aptly be translated as “About the Line”—is an exciting, challenging work that attempts to fathom the core phenomena of chamber music.

Cellist Lucas Fels will perform Rihm’s work, then afterwards toss some lines back and forth with the MPIEA’s Christian Grüny together with the audience, by way of exploring the significance of the line as metaphor. Is the line we draw the same as the line toed? And what is on the line when we fall out of line—or into line? What kind of line is a line of thinking? A fine line? A hard line? A line in the sand? A lifeline?

Musician: Lucas Fels, Cello

Lucas Fels pursued his training in Freiburg, Amsterdam, and Fiesole. As a founding member of the world-renowned Ensemble Recherche, he has long been actively involved in fostering the development of contemporary chamber music and has premiered several hundred works in his 21 years as a member.

As cellist of The Arditti Quartet, Fels has premiered many contemporary classical works for strings, including cello concertos by Wolfgang Rihm (Styx und Lethe, 1998), Walter Zimmermann (Subrisio Saltat, 2003), Sebastian Claren (After Blinky Palermo, 2002), and Mathias Spahlinger (Lamento, Protokoll, 2013). Since 2013, he has served as Professor for the Interpretative Practice and Instruction of New Music at the University of Music and the Performing Arts (HfMDK) in Frankfurt am Main.
