We are very pleased to announce this conference on “Music and Eye-tracking“ (MET17), which will bring together the leading experts from psychology, all fields of music research, sociology, cultural sciences, and neuroscience, united in the interest to investigate musical processing using eye-tracking methodology or combining eye-tracking with other methods.

Musical processing unfolds in different domains. One obvious application of eye-tracking methodology is music sight-reading, a field, where much progress has been made in the 20th century. During the last few years there seems to be growing enthusiasm to apply eye-tracking methodology to capture the full complexity of musical processing, extending to music perception, cognition, learning, skill-acquisition, expertise, performance, social interactions, rhythmic entrainment, emotion processing, induced states of altered awareness, and cross-modal interactions between the auditory, visual, or motoric systems, to name just a few examples.

With this conference, we hope to provide a platform for expert researchers at the intersection of music and eye-tracking to communicate with one another, to foster and enrich discussions about methods, and to continue refining models and theories of musical processing with insights from eye-tracking. We have also invited researchers that apply more basic questions, e.g., research on cross-modal interactions. Together we will discuss the complex question: what do eye movements, pupil dilation, and blinking activity tell us about musical processing?

Special Issue in JEMR

We arranged for a special issue with selected presentations from the conference to be published in the Journal of Eye Movement Research, starting fall/winter 2017/18.

Application:

Abstract submission is CLOSED. Registration is CLOSED. Hopefully this will be the first of many conferences combining music and eye-tracking.

The conference will be conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, Grüneburgweg 14, 60322 Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Registration Fees:

There is no fee to attend the conference.

Travel/Accommodation:

Travel expenses and accommodation have to be booked and paid separately by conference participants. Please check whether you will need a visa for Germany! Applying for and obtaining the visa is your own responsibility.

Accommodation:

Conference Hotel: We reserved a small number of rooms for single occupancy in a hotel close to the workshop venue: Turm Hotel.

These single rooms can be booked until July 14th (ranging between 55 to 75 €/night; breakfast has to be booked extra for 10 €). Please use the phrase "Max-Planck August" for reservation for the special price. This special is only valid for the two nights from 17th to 18th and 18th to 19th of August.

GENERAL: How to purchase a train ticket:

You have to purchase a ticket on a machine with German or English as operating languages.  Those machines are placed in the entrance areas of the station, usually before you are taking stairs down to the train platforms. Just click “Einzelfahrt Frankfurt” or “Single trip Frankfurt” for an adult. You need change to buy a ticket.

Directions upon arrival at the airport:

Please follow the signs to the “Regional-Bahnhof” at the airport, the underground train station for the S-trains. After purchasing a ticket, go downstairs and take S8 or S9, direction “Hanau”. Get off and change trains at the station “Hauptwache”. Take the U1, U2, U3 or U8 not to Frankfurt Süd but to any other directions (Oberursel (Taunus)-Hohemark, Ginnheim, Nieder-Eschbach, Riedberg) and get off the second stop at “Grüneburgweg”.

Directions upon arrival by train:

At Frankfurt main station (“Hauptbahnhof”) take underground line U4 or U5 to “Willy-Brandt-Platz”. Get off and change trains at “Willy-Brandt-Platz”. Take the U1, U2, U3 or U8 not to Frankfurt Süd but to any other directions (see above) and get off the third stop at “Grüneburgweg”.

How to get from the underground station “Grüneburgweg” to MPIEA:

Take the exit "Grüneburgweg", after 50 m turn right into "Grüneburgweg". Stay on the right side of the street. After crossing the second side street ("Im Trutz"), you will find our Institute in the building Westend Carree on your right, entrance Grüneburgweg 14.

Travel Direction upon Arrival by Car:

On the motorway A5 at Autobahnkreuz (interchange) Nordwestkreuz Frankfurt keep right and follow the signs A66 in direction “F-Miquelallee/F-Stadtmitte”. Take the fork in the direction of Frankfurt-Miquelallee and follow A66 for another 5 km.

Continue on Miquellallee/B8 for another 700 m, then turn right into „Eschersheimer Landstraße”. After about 1200 m turn right into “Grüneburgweg”. When you pass the street "Im Trutz“ you will find our Institute in the building Westend Carree on your right, entrance Grüneburgweg 14.
