Recent years have seen an increasing interest in studying brain oscillations to discover fundamental principles of speech processing in the human brain. New findings have been met with great enthusiasm but also criticism. In my presentation I will review some of the recent developments pertaining to the question what brain oscillations can tell us about speech processing. I will critically discuss advantages and pitfalls in the use of spectral analysis for studying speech processing. Arguments will be based on conceptual and technical considerations. Finally, I will summarise new findings from our ongoing projects.
