Creative Dialogues between Human and Machine

Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently transforming our society and has opened up completely new avenues in many research fields, including music.

In this research theme, we aim to create a new multidisciplinary and multi-method research programme that enables the study of the creative dialogues that are at the heart of music making. Music making entails multiple dialogues: between performer and audience; between performers as they play together; between composer and performers. While sonic materials are the primary component in these dialogues, gestures, facial expression, breathing patterns and other subtle forms of communication are also important. Therefore, to fully understand these creative dialogues we need to capture multi-modal data while also integrating this data into musical knowledge. We propose to open a new pathway towards this goal through the lens of joint human-AI improvisation.
