Developing computational systems for modelling musical style
Musical style is a combination of musical material, instrumentation, production, and performance. This talk considers the ways in which music's rich pedagogical tradition can be leveraged in building computational systems to model the organization of musical material and how the vast number of musical recordings can be harnessed to develop computational models of musical performance practices. In particular, it will focus on how data-driven music harmony models can be augmented with music-theoretic knowledge and how musical performance data can be automatically extracted and modelled from audio recordings in ways that mirror human listening practices. The integration of deep domain knowledge and human engagement with data-based approaches has implications not just for music but for the digital humanities more broadly, specifically for problems where there is a large amount of domain expertise that can be modelled, such as the study of written cultural products.
