Do cortical oscillations play a role in speech perception? And if so, are they active in segmenting speech, decoding it, or both? To date, we have made progress in formulating cortical computation principles that underly segmentation. Models of syllabic segmentation, with theta band activity at the core, are now reasonably explicit and mature. Models of prosodic segmentation, with delta at the core, are not yet well established. For these models to successfully predict psychophysical data, some necessary requirements must be satisfied. I will discuss a list of such requirements, examine the degree to which they are plausible and answerable, and conclude with emerging, pressing questions.
